CBG vs CBN vs CBD: the cannabinoids compared
Three cannabinoids, three roles in a range: CBD as the basis, CBG as the scarce mother cannabinoid and CBN as a breakdown product of THC. This comparison sets out origin, properties and purchasing relevance at a glance — with a table for your range decision.
CBG, CBN and CBD at a glance
All three come from the same hemp plant and none is intoxicating in the sense that THC is. They differ considerably, however, in origin, natural occurrence, price level and role in a range:
| Criterion | CBD | CBG | CBN |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class | major cannabinoid | minor cannabinoid | minor cannabinoid |
| Origin | formed from CBGA | precursor (CBGA) | breakdown of THC |
| Occurrence | high (up to 20% and more) | low (< 1 %) | low, through ageing |
| Psychoactive | No | No | very weakly |
| Price level | low | high | medium to high |
| Role in a range | core product | premium / differentiation | niche / night-time line |
The wider context — spectra, quality and the route into trade — is gathered in our cannabinoid guide.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most important non-psychoactive cannabinoid by volume and the basis of almost every range — from oils and flowers through to cosmetics. In the plant it is formed directly from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and is readily available in CBD-rich varieties, which makes it the cheapest of the three.
The basics, briefly, in the CBD glossary entry. CBD forms the volume business on which CBG and CBN build as differentiation.
What is CBG?
Cannabigerol (CBG) is the mother of all cannabinoids: from its acid form CBGA the plant biosynthesises CBD, THC and CBC. In mature plants most of the CBGA has already been converted, so usually less than one per cent of CBG remains — and that low concentration makes CBG raw material laborious and expensive.

What is CBN?
Cannabinol (CBN) is a special case: it does not form directly from CBGA but as a breakdown product of THC, through oxidation, light and ageing. Stored plant material therefore shows higher CBN values. CBN is only very weakly psychoactive and on the market is frequently associated with relaxation and sleep — a positioning that is not conclusively established scientifically.

The differences in detail
Order of biosynthesis: CBGA stands at the beginning. From it come CBDA, THCA and CBCA — and after decarboxylation CBD, THC and CBC. CBG is therefore the common origin, while CBN stands at the end of the chain: it forms when THC oxidises over time.
Concentration and price: CBD is abundant and therefore cheap. CBG is scarce and expensive, because the plant processes it onward early. CBN is not present in fresh material at all but has to be enriched or isolated deliberately from aged material.
Availability: CBD goods are widely available; CBG and CBN are specialities that require clean extraction and an unbroken certificate of analysis The interplay of several cannabinoids is what the entourage effect.
draws on.
What it means for retailers and the range
For range planning a simple logic applies: CBD carries the volume, CBG and CBN create differentiation and premium positioning. Both minor cannabinoids attract high search interest and speak to an audience that cares about quality and innovation. Compliance:
No disease-related therapeutic claims — statements about CBN and sleep only as an observation of the market, never as a promise of effect. Since CBN arises from THC, the THC value in the COA deserves particular scrutiny; for products taken orally, the novel food status as well. What decides a purchase is the cannabinoid profile according to the COA per batch
